oh here i am,
MOANING&GROANING ABOUT THE LEVEL OF APATHY IN SINGAPOREAN STUDENTS.

let me very civilised and start of by defining what apathy is.
It is "the lack of emotion, motivation, or enthusiasm. Apathy is a psychological term for a state of indifference — where an individual is unresponsive or "indifferent" to aspects of emotional, social, or physical life.

Clinical apathy is considered to be at an elevated level, while a moderate level might be considered depression, and an extreme level could be diagnosed as a dissociative disorder
. The physical aspect of apathy associated with physical deterioriation , muscle loss, and lack of energy is called lethargy — which has many pathological causes as well.

Apathy can be object-specific — toward a person, activity or environment. It is a common reaction to stress where it manifests as "learned helplessness" and is commonly associated with depression. It can also reflect a non-pathological lack of interest in things one does not consider important." [wikipedia]

my enjoyable ride home on bus 154 was unmagnimously destroyed by the very rude behaviour of certain students. there were (exceptionally) many students on the bus today.

i was sitting next to the aisle minding my business when a group of HCI boys boarded, towered around me and unceremoniously disrupted my peace. it wasn't that bad i admit, but following that, more and more students boarded.

then, at the busstop at mgs, a lady boarded the bus with two girls that looked p1 & p2. there were probably 25 odd students in the bus. guess who was the only one who gave up her seat? YOURS TRULY. shameful really. there were 3ppl who needed seats and i could only give up my seat to one of the girls.

i shall be so bold as to name schools of the students on the bus. HCI (who made up the bulk), NAN HUA SEC, ACS(I) AND ACS BARKER.

there were so many of them there but not one made the effort to give up their seat or move towards the back so others could board. i'm not trying to be so noble by saying i was the sole rgs girl there and i was the only one who gave up my seat. but c'mon, how much effort does it take to remove your ass and stand?! it really reflects badly on your school.

the moment i got up from my seat i felt like i was towering over all of them (even though physically i wasn't). to further my point, let me emphasize two examples.

Example 1: there was this hci guy that boarded and sat down. he was dmn poseur with spiked hair+jacket+ipod and even shoved his bag behind his seat when he sat down. then he took out his phone and started smsing.

what's the point of acting poseur when you don't even have smth called compassion?!

Example 2: there was this group of hci guys (again), that were discussing about how many rounds they ran this morning. yeah go aheaad and talk and pretend to be blind.

do you know the meaning of apathy? let me enlighten you: The physical aspect of apathy associated with physical deterioriation , muscle loss, and lack of energy is called lethargy — which has many pathological causes as well. (see definition of apathy above). MAYBE that's why you cannot run well, cos u have so much apathy that it affects your physical well-being -.-

i know im making a gross hasty generalisation by moaning at the level of apathy in singaporean students just by looking at this small sample size (philo!). but the indifference of students is still shocking and highly disturbing

in this case, the apathy is object-specific: indifference to the needs of others. i didn't know that being selfish is "learned-helplessness" and the apathy that has been displayed is due to the "stress" of losing one's seat for the good of another.

i have news for you, this is the sunny island of singapore. if smth like lifting your ass off a seat is already so stressful for you, i have advice for you: you're not even close to being able to cope with the education system here. migrate to another country where the education system is less competitive and demanding. (or u could just transfer to acs international)

maybe we srsly need clinical psychological help.
